Prince Edward lifted the lid on how the Royal Family feels about the split with the Sussexes. Answering candidly to a question probing on the tensions, the Earl of Wessex said the situation is "very sad".

In an interview with CNN's Max Foster, the youngest son of the Queen said of the divide: "You know, it' it's very sad.

"Weirdly we’ve all been there before. "We’ve all had excessive intrusion and attention in our lives.

"And we’ve all dealt with it in slightly different ways, and list, we wish them the very best of luck. "It’s a really hard decision."

Prince Edward briefly spoke about Meghan and Harry's daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana, who was born on June 4.

In his first public comment about the birth of the 11th great-granddaughter of the Queen, the Earl said: "Fantastic news about the baby – that’s great.

"I hope they’ll be very happy." "It’s just… families are families, aren’t they, really?"

Mr Foster acknowledged many families have experienced rifts or fallouts, adding the one within the Firm has been played out publicly for the nature of the Royal Family.

Probed on the Queen's feelings about the rift and "how difficult it has been for her", Prince Edward replied: "It’s difficult for everyone, but that’s families for you."
